Story of the Triangle Fabric Mountains Mini Quilt - Blogger's Quilt Festival

Blogger's Quilt Festival time and I thought: oh, why not join in the fun?! I'm participating with my Triangle Fabric Mountains mini quilt, celebrating the beautiful mountains of Lake Maggiore, in the north of Italy.

I got the idea for the design of this quilt after I joined the Library Project Quilt Along over at Adrienne's Chezzetcook Quilts and decided to add a triangle quilt to my challenges for the Quilt Along. I had seen Jeni Baker's equilateral triangle quilt pattern "Trios Lap Quilt" in issue 1 of Love Patchwork & Quilting and was curious about piecing triangles.

And here's the sketch I made of an idea I had for a baby quilt using triangles to make a mountain scene. I sometimes draw on odd bits of paper or serviettes and then stick the drawings in my note book. This sketch is particularly scruffy! But it's funny how the main idea hasn't changed at all.

Then Paula at The Sassy Quilter hosted the fun Triangle Quilt Along and I thought it would be helpful to have a tight schedule for making my baby quilt, which in the meantime became a mini quilt.

So this pile of triangles:

got this long but very useful "tip cutting off" treatment:

And I thought I was going to go mad sewing 119 3" triangles, but when the rows started coming together I saw it was worth the trouble:

The final result:

The quilting is just around the mountains and the "cloud" machine embroidery on the white background fabric.

Making plans: Finish Along Q2

I love making lists! The problem is crossing things off afterwards. Need a little bit of help here so I'm joining the Finish Along Quarter 2 over at Katy's The Littlest Thistle. Nothing better than a deadline to make things move faster...

So here's my list:

TRIANGLE QUILT: for the Triangle QAL over at Paula's @ The Sassy Quilter. I've already managed to miss two link ups and this is what my quilt is looking like at the moment. I am planning on speeding up though. It's a mini quilt so I'm hopeful.

FUN TRIANGLE PROJECT: the above quilt along inspired this fun triangle project I still haven't managed to finish (here's a peek), so I'm adding this to the list in the hope of finishing it soon.

CARDIGAN GIRLS: found two of these super pretty panels for 3 Euro (that's just over 4 Dollars) each and am planning to transform them into two lightweight quilts for my daughters' beds.

ZAKKA BLOCK QUILT: love this quilt and now I absolutely want to see it finished!

EXPERIMENT PROJECT: I can't think up a name for this one but it's another project that has been hanging around for too long, because there is something I need to change... Work in progress at the moment.

My list in the end is longer than I thought it would be but there are some smaller projects here, so I'm positive. Now to work!

The Zakka Block Quilt - A Lovely Year of Finishes

The Zakka Block Quilt top is finished and I'm so happy with it that I'm loading this post with lots of photos of it! I used nearly two charm packs of Architextures by Carolyn Friedlander I'd bought from Mad about Patchwork and I love how they look with the Essex Yarn Dyed in Black.

Set my goal for a Lovely Year of Finishes here and after an initial mistake piecing, all the rest of the top went smoothly!

This is my first quilt for The Library Project over at Adrienne's Chezzetcook Quilts and the quilt top was my goal for March for A Lovely Year of Finishes, so I'm linking up here:

The Library Project QAL: February Report

I am so glad to have joined The Library Project over at Adrienne's Chezzetcook Quilts because at last I've started a quilt I've been wanting to make for ages. The Zakka Block Quilt by Leslie Good in the book Zakka Style. I have just the fabric I wanted to use and a lot of motivation through the quilt a long, so here's to a good beginning...

  

..well nearly a good beginning because only when I ironed the piecing did I realise I'd sewn two identical charms one on top of the other (the blue trees) and now I'm going to have to unstitch this part!

This is the piecing I was meant to sew there instead of one of the top blue trees square, it must have been hiding somewhere on my sewing table. Does this only happen to me? I'm lucky it's not much to unstitch!

I've changed the pattern a little bit because I had two beautiful charm packs I'd bought from Mad about Patchwork that I really wanted to use and they are 5"x5" squares. The pattern in the book is for 6"x6" squares so I switched to the charm squares and added another column to make up the difference. It works really well with the width of the background material too and sewing charms makes this a really fast quilt to piece. You only have to cut the background material!

 

The wind was blowing while I was trying to take photos and I wish I'd taken one with it half lifted into the air, it was so pretty! But I was in a rush as the sun was setting and only afterwards, looking at the photos, did I notice that somebody must have been sitting on the piecing just before I photographed it!

Challenges 2014: The Library Project Quilt Along at Chezzetcook Modern Quilts

Adrienne at Chezzetcook Modern Quilts has had this brilliant idea: she's challenging us to select at least 4 projects from our personal Modern Quilting Library (that's posh for the untidy and ever growing stack of books and magazines I've got on my shelf!), one per book/magazine, and to make them during the year. There's going to be a monthly progress link up and a final finish/prizes link up in December.

Here is my choice of projects:

1) Zakka Block Quilt by Leslie Good in Zakka Style (Compiled by Rashida Coleman-Hale)

and this is the beautiful fabric I'm planning on using: Essex Yarn Dyed in Black and Architextures by Carolyn Friedlander. I ordered this fabric last year (from the very helpful and efficient Pam at Mad About Patchwork) so I'm in keeping with my Fabriholics Anonymous commitment!

2) Window Box quilt from Color Shuffle by Karla Alexander. It's a long time I've been wanting to make this quilt and now is the chance. I don't have the fabric for it but the fast finishes in June so maybe I'll still manage to make it by the end of the year!

3) This is a smaller sized project: Appliquéd Floor Mat by Suzuko Koseki from Natural Patchwork. I can use scraps for this project and I'm planning on using shades of orange.

4) I would love to make this quilt as a present for a baby who is nearly one year old, but there's a problem: I've looked for my copy of the magazine everywhere and I can't find it. It's Chloe Owen's mini rainbow quilt from issue 9 of Mollie Makes and I have absolutely no idea where it is. So if there is somebody kind enough to send me a copy of the page with the instructions I would be so grateful. I've had a subscription to Mollie Makes for a long time now and this quilt has really stuck in my mind. I'm going to make it anyway even if I have to invent the measurements. Does this count?

These are the stunning, beautiful, wonderful, incredible, graphic fabrics I'm going to use (Father Christmas so kindly brought these!): Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander. You've guessed right, I'm a fan!

5) I have another project that I would really like to make. I know it's not a quilt but it's from one of my much loved Tilda books so I'm hoping Adrienne doesn't mind if I slip this fabric teapot in, maybe nobody will notice it's not a quilt, ehm ehm... It's so cute and I have horded some Tilda fabric for too long anyway, so why not?!

6) I am intrigued lately by equilateral triangles and this quilt by Jeni Baker really caught my eye: Trios Lap Quilt. The pattern is on issue 1 of Love Patchwork & Quilting magazine. I'm still thinking about my fabric choices for this one.

At the moment I'm working on my Barn Door Quilt and on the January One Block Project. Then it's back to the books!
