Cosy Tea Set: Twin Teapot and Mug Cosy Tutorial with free template

Fed up with all the bad weather? We are! Can't wait for Spring to start? We've made something to cheer ourselves up and keep our tea warm at the same time: the Cosy Tea Set. Here's our tutorial and free template to download so you can make your own matching Tea and Mug Cosy

Here is what you need to make the Cosy Tea Set:
  • Felt 1/8" thick at least 10" x 13" (x2) for one teapot cosy and 9 1/2" x 8" (x2) for one mug cosy
  • A rotary cutter and mat or a very sharp pair of scissors
  • A water soluble marker
  • Your favourite fabric to fussy cut
  • Heat Bond or other lightweight paper-backed adhesive
  • Matching (or contrasting!) thread
  • Paper to draw out templates

Start by printing the template for the teapot cosy and tracing it on an A3 sized paper (or larger), flipping it over to make the template for the whole front of the cosy. Click on the image of the template below or here to download:

We suggest making another copy of the full template and sewing the two copies together with your sewing machine (using an old needle) to make a mock paper teapot cosy. This is very useful for trying out the size on your teapot. Teapots and mugs vary so much in size and shape that this is a good way to find out if yours will fit without wasting any felt.

When you’re happy with the size of the template, place it on the felt and trace around it with a water soluble marker. Cut out the shape using your rotary cutter or a sharp pair of scissors. Trace the template again on the felt to make the back of your tea cosy.

Take the fabric you’ve chosen to fussy cut and iron it on to Heatbond (or other lightweight paper-backed adhesive), following the instructions of the producer. We always use baking paper between the iron and the fabric to protect both! Cut precisely around the print on your fabric. Peel the paper off the back of the fabric and iron into place on one piece of felt, making sure to leave at least 1" from the edge of the felt for the seam allowance.

Sew around the fussy cut fabric using a matching (or contrasting, if you prefer) thread. Try to stitch as close as possible to the edge of the fabric.

Fold the front piece of felt in half and mark the central top point. Fold a piece of 5" long ribbon in half and place under the mark, centering and leaving a tag that’s about 1 1/2" long. Pin in place. Place the two felt pieces wrong sides facing and pin to stop them from moving. Sew around the edge with just over a 1/4" seam allowance. You can choose a thread that matches the felt or that contrasts. Sew forwards and backwards a couple of times at the beginning and end of the cosy edge to reinforce the opening points.
Repeat for the Mug Cosy, making a paper cosy to test the size of your mug before cutting into the felt!

Enjoy a nice cup of hot tea!

Nesta, pensa che tempo fa, ad un mercatino d'antiquariato ho scambiato un copriteiera per una cuffietta da notte! Ma era in pizzo antico......un pò tipo a cloche....che m'ha tratto in inganno! :)
